The 6th Century historian Procopious describes the Constantinople of his day as a disorderly tyranny, weighed down not only by the fear of the ruthless emperor and his favorites, but also by an ambiance of street violence, originally politically motivated by the blue and green factions, now transformed into simple extortion.
